Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I join?

A: Come on down to a free intro class on Saturday at 10 am. Click here for more information.

Q: What is CrossFit?

A: Check out here and here. CrossFit relies on full-body movements that will leave you feeling, moving, and looking better.  Workouts are short and intense. You will jump, run, lift, throw, squat, pull, and push. Your coach will help to design workouts that are appropriate for your current fitness level.

Q: I'm new to CrossFit. These workouts look way too intense for my ability-level. Do you have something for me?

A: Yes. CrossFit workouts are scalable to all ability levels. There will be many other people like you at every class.

Q: I'm still dealing with an old injury, I'm in bad shape, and I can't do any pull-ups. Can I still do CrossFit?

A: Yes, we will help to adjust your program according to any prior injuries or physical limitations.  You will work to increase mobility in the area of your injury, while slowly gaining strength so as to prevent future injuries. Many clients find that CrossFit has an immediate impact upon their ability to perform daily tasks that used to seem quite arduous.

Q: What are the classes like?

A: Classes are scheduled in one-hour blocks and are sometimes shorter, never longer. Classes typically consist of a warm-up, skill practice or a strength workout, the Workout of the Day (WOD), and a cool-down. The WOD itself rarely lasts longer than twenty minutes. Each class is led by a certified CrossFit coach. Classes are kept small, maximizing personal attention.

Q: So I will be lifting weights?  Won't that make me bulky?

A: No, we aren't the ones feeding you. To look like a weightlifter, you have to eat like a weightlifter.  Mark Rippetoe, renowned fitness expert and author of Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, once said, "The vast majority of women cannot get large, masculine muscles from barbell training. If it were that easy, I would have them."

Q: Can you give me nutritional advice?

A: You can find a great introduction to CrossFit's dietary prescription here. You can find a more detailed discussion here. Cut down on carbs and processed food and eat moderate portions of lean meat, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. A healthy diet is very important in achieving your aesthetic and performance goals.  Eat real food.  Shop around the outsides of the supermarket. Eat organic and locally.  Mark's Daily Apple and Robb Wolf's site are great resources.  We are big believers in Michael Pollan's prescription: "Eat food.  Not too much.  Mostly plants."  Send an e-mail to info@gunxcrossfit.com if you have specific questions regarding your diet, or ask your coach at a session.

Q: How many days per week should I come to CrossFit?

A: Everyone is different. Some people like to follow CrossFit.com's recommended cycle of 3 on/1 off (meaning three days in a row of training, followed by one rest day).  Others come to CrossFit every other day. We encourage members to keep records of their performances to measure progress, which enables you to set goals for the future.

Q: Do you offer discounts?

A: Yes, for students, firefighters, members of the military, EMT/EMS, and police officers.

Q: What is your schedule?

A: See here.  Private and semi-private classes are available at other times.  Send us an e-mail [info@gunxcrossfit.com] if you are interested.

Q: I'm confused.  Are you in Gardiner or New Paltz?

A: The answer is both. You can see our exact location here.  Our mailing address considers our location to be in New Paltz. However, if you are driving from town in NP, you will see a sign telling you that you have entered Gardiner before you reach GunxCrossFit.  We really don't know why. . .

Q: What are all those random links on each day's post?

A: Every day, we try to give you a few thought-provoking, often fitness-related links to check out.  Feel free to comment on any post that catches your eye, even if you are not yet a member of the gym.

Still have questions? Shoot us an email (info@gunxcrossfit.com). Remember, there is a free intro class every Saturday at 10 am, and you must call or email to reserve a spot.
